What Tropical Climates Can Teach Us About Beauty Product Performance

Many beauty products sold in Malaysia are developed for climates that are very different from our own. Many beauty trends and formulations originate from temperate regions (e.g., south korea) where heat, humidity, and constant sweating are not daily conditions. Over time, I’ve come to realise that climate quietly influences how a product behaves, even if it is often overlooked in conversations about formulation.

In a tropical climate like Malaysia, beauty products are constantly under stress. High humidity affects how long textures last on the skin. Heat changes how formulas feel once applied. Even simple daily transitions between outdoor weather and air-conditioned spaces can alter performance in ways that are easy to miss in controlled environments.

Lip products make this especially clear. Lip oils, with their lightweight texture, can feel beautiful at first but often dissipate quickly in humidity. Traditional lip balms, often high in wax, create a protective layer but may sit on the surface without delivering lasting comfort. Lip glosses developed in cooler climates can also feel too thick or overly occlusive for daily wear in tropical conditions.

This is why I sometimes think we don’t just need different products, we need different balance points. One thing tropical climates have taught me is that product performance is rarely determined by formulation alone. Climate influences how a product feels, wears, and lasts throughout the day. I've found that the most comfortable moisturizing lip products for the tropics often sit somewhere between balm, oil, and gloss. Not too thin that they disappear, and not too thick that they only coat the surface. Something that feels comforting and lightweight, but still holds up in heat and humidity.

This idea of balance became especially important while formulating Balmy Gloss. One ingredient I found especially valuable was Meadowfoam Seed Oil, valued for its stability and its cushioned, non-greasy feel. It played an important role in shaping a texture that feels comfortable and wearable in real tropical conditions like heat, humidity, and daily movement.

Maybe it's time we recognise that climate is not a small detail in beauty. It is part of how beauty products truly perform. When a product doesn't feel quite right, we often assume the formula is the problem. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it's simply responding to a climate it was never designed for.
